Do and Don'ts

Dust and Dirt

The best way to remove dirt and dust is to use a solution of warm soapy water and gently wipe your leather bag with a clean cloth soaked in the solution. Don’t use any strong soaps as this could damage the pigment. A mild liquid hand soap will do the job. Don’t rub in too hard as to it could damage the leather or even remove the pigmented colour, causing it to fade or crack away. Cleaning your leather bag this way at least once a week is an excellent habit. Apart from this home DIY method you could buy and use specially designed products for removing dirt and dust from leather.

Do not get your leather bag wet. If it does, then wipe off the excess water immediately with a dry cloth and let the bag dry naturally. Do not force dry your leather bag, for instance, by using something like a hair dryer or keeping it over a radiator. This type of forced heat could damage the leather and the pigmented colour.

If you are going to experience bad weather continuously, we recommend you to use a leather water proofing product to protect your leather bag. Bees wax is an excellent alternative water proofing method. Remember to spot test before applying any product on to your leather bag to see if you are happy with the outcome before applying to the whole bag.

Extreme Temperatures

At all costs avoid extremely hot or cold temperatures. Keep away from direct sunlight as this could fade the colour of your leather bag. Also, exposure to heat could cause the pigmented finish to bubble and peel away. Freezing temperatures can damage the leather fibres making them crack and can also cause the pigmented coat to crack excessively.

Removing Ink Marks

The key to removing ink marks is to treat them straight away. Your first and best bet is to take your leather bag to see a professional as soon as possible. If you’re unable to, try a special ink removing product for leather and follow the care instructions. Make sure that you condition the area afterwards and leave to dry properly. If the ink stains are old don’t try to remove these yourself. They will likely be too stubborn and will need professional care.

Storage

Proper storage of your leather bag is essential. Always store your leather bag in a clean, dry place. Use our specially designed dust bags when storing. This will protect your leather bag from dust and at the same time, let it breathe. If you don’t have one of our specially designed dust bags, then you could also use a pillowcase to store your leather bag. Do not store your leather bag in closed plastic bags. Leather needs to breathe, and if you store or transport in closed plastic bags, the leather could develop mildew and rot.

Also, when storing your leather bag add in some Silica Gel packets inside to make sure that your leather bag stays dry.

When storing your leather bag for long periods of time, make sure to pack the inside of your leather bag full, with old newspapers or something similar, so that the bag maintains its shape. Remember that leather stretches but does not shrink back, so don’t over-do the packing.
